Located in the nearly 100 year old former Emmanuel Episcopal Chapel in rural Boyce, VA, the Sono Luminus studios are a world-class recording facility with a special focus on classical and acoustic music, and the home of the Sono Luminus record label. Studio A boasts a 25 foot vaulted wood ceiling over a 35’x65′ original heart pine floor, providing a beautiful natural acoustic. Sono Luminus specializes in the highest caliber of audio quality with the capability of recording 24 simultaneous channels of audio with sample rates up to DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) 352kHz/24bit or DSD (Direct Stream Digital).
As the first American record label to release audio projects on Pure Audio Blu-Ray technology, Sono Luminus specializes in the highest caliber of audio quality. Not only does this format guarantee the utmost in sonic experience available, it also gives Sono Luminus the ability to routinely release recordings on Blu-ray discs containing 9.1 Auro-3D 96kHz/24 bit surround sound, 5.1 DTS HD MA 192kHz/24bit surround sound, and 2.0 LPCM 192kHz/24bit stereo files.
Among the world’s finest audio facilities, Sono Luminus’ recording method focuses on the concept of true performance fidelity; the seamless marriage of stellar sound quality with exceptionally high performances. Over the past seven years, this approach of getting the sound “right” at the beginning of the process via mic placement and performer set-up has enabled Sono Luminus to garner two GRAMMY awards and eighteen GRAMMY nominations.
Sono Luminus has had the pleasure of recording a large collection of artists for it’s own label, as well as providing recording and production services for albums released on various other labels, including Steinway & Sons, RCA Red Seal, Bridge, Hännsler, Kennedy Center, Koch, Naxos, and Sonabilis.
Sono Luminus, was created in 1995 when Sandy Lerner and Len Bosack, founders of Cisco Systems, a top supplier of networking tools for the Internet decided that their expertise in digital signal processing, computational mathematics and physics would enable them to bring a new level of recording fidelity to music. Drawing upon their expertise in digital technologies as well as their love of music, they applied their experiences to realize a life-long dream: to develop and create a new paradigm for recorded sound, dedicated to the realization of true Performance Fidelity. To achieve this, Sono Luminus adopted a simple philosophy of “less is more.” Allowing for natural ambient acoustics, recorded dry, to determine optimal microphone placement, Sono Luminus became a first choice for acoustic, classical and early music artists and ensembles.
In 2005, after over a decade of producing critically acclaimed recordings for several major and independent labels, Sono Luminus decided to enter the market under its own masthead. The acquisition of the Dorian catalogue provided Sono Luminus with an extraordinary opportunity to build upon past accomplishments and establish new standards of excellence. The new company, operating as Sono Luminus, benefits not only from the proven entrepreneurial expertise of Sono Luminus founders Sandy Lerner and Len Bosack, but has assembled a distinguished team of the brightest innovative newcomers to the Engineering and Creative sides of the company as well as the top industry veterans, who demonstrate their commitment to excellence in every project.
